Industrial Sound Design # 2, Umeå Institute of Design, 1 week in 2010

The aim of this exercise was to design a product/ object and create matching sounds for it. The assignment was open, we could create what kind of object we wanted. The course was held during one week in the Masters Programme. The exercise was executed in groups. I worked together with the classmates John Lindén and Yangchen Zhang.

The result is a "pet" for blood donors. As a blood donor, you give away something personal to a stranger in need. We created a pet that strive to connect the donor and the receiver some how.

The final demonstration of the "Donor-Pet."

Initial brainstorm. We brainstormed about what we were going to focus on.

Images from our research at the blood central. Since I am a blood donor, I thought that it was a good opportunity to give some blood and do research at the same time. John is recording the sound of the cradle that weights the blood and keeps it in motion.

Back at school, we had a brief brainstorm session to decide how we could go further with our project. We decided to design a pillow with different features such as motion, sound and light. The pillow is ment to lie at the bed at the blood central for the blood donor to carry while they are donating some blood if they like.

We planned how we could build the prototype and what we needed.

Images of different tests when we tried to get the motion part to work.

A collage of the parts and how we hooked up the wires in our prototype.
