Work Environment Project at the Bachelor Programme in Industrial Design, UmeƄ Institute of Design, 10 weeks in 2007.

This was a school project we had together in collaboration with the company Fenix Environmental. They offer meassurements of harmful particles in air and create analysis of different measures to the situation. They had designed an own equippment for measure particles around the breathing zone. They asked us to look at the big picture to see if we could design a better solution.

The final result, a harness for the equippment for meassure harmful particles in air.

The owner of the company demonstrated us how to mount their harness on the user. The harness was quite old and had many unnecessary features. We analyzed the flow and specifyed the problem areas.

The filter cassette and the pumps that is used when the company makes particle measures. The pumps weight between one and two kg.

User studies. The class formed four groups and observed two welders and two traffic wardens. We tested the companie's own solution , a pipe hanging from the ear with the filter cassette in the end.

We created along list of function with four topics, technical aspects, ergonomics, aesthetics and production and materials.

Brainstorm session.

The three concepts I created. Two with the pump hanging around the hip and one with the pump placed at the back. The hip can resist more heavily objects. The pump weight between 1 and 2 kg. In addition to that, the pump makes a noise that is good to get a distance from.

User workshop. I evaluated my three concepts together with welders and traffic wardens.

This is how to put on the harness.

The final model which is quite adaptable.

Some details of the final model .
